Centres of Excellence in Research

The University of Turku is part of three Centres of Excellence of the Academy of Finland during the period of 2018–2025.

  • Professor of Digital Culture Jaakko Suominen is the leader of the research group in the CoE in Game Culture Studies coordinated by Professor of Hypermedia Frans Mäyrä from the University of Tampere.
  • Professor of Space Physics bis the leader of the research group in the CoE in Research of Sustainable Space led by Professor of Space Physics bof the University of Helsinki.
  • Professor of Theoretical Physics bis the leader of the research group in the CoE in Quantum Technology coordinated by Professor of  Physics Jukka Pekola of Aalto University.

The University of Turku coordinates two Academy of Finland’s Centres of Excellence  in the period of 2014–2019.

  • The Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology of Primary Producers , led by Professor of Molecular Plant Biology Eva-Mari Aro. In addition to the University of Turku, the University of Helsinki is part of the CoE.
  • TheCentre of Excellence in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease, led by the Director of the Turku PET Centre, Professor Juhani Knuuti. In addition to the University of Turku, the University of Eastern Finland is part of the CoE. Academy Professor Riitta Lahesmaa from the University of Turku is the primary investigator in one of the research groups of the CoE.
  • In addition, the University of Turku is part of the Centre of Excellence in Translational Cancer Biologycoordinated by the University of Helsinki. Group leaders at the University of Turku are Academician Sirpa Jalkanen and Professor Johanna Ivaska.

The University of Turku is part of a national Centres of Excellence of the Academy of Finland in the period for 2012–2017.

  • Two of the five research groups of the CoE in Molecular Systems Immunology and Physiology Research, led by Professor Mikael Knip and coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, are based in the University of Turku. These research groups are led by Professor Riitta Lahesmaa and Professor Matej Oresic.

In addition to the Academy of Finland’s Centres of Excellence, the University of Turku also coordinates the Nordic Centre of Excellence which is funded by NordFrosk.

NordAqua

The Nordic Centre of Excellence led by Academy Professor Eva-Mari Aro focuses on blue bioeconomy. Special emphasis is placed on micro and macro algae and their utilisation. The objective is to develop commercial applications based on micro-organisms and to strengthen entrepreneurship in the field.
