How to apply

You can apply for the doctoral programme twice a year. The application periods for the academic year 2018-2019 are

  • 3-21 September, 2018
  • 1-20 March, 2019
 You can apply 
  •  a  right to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Turku (both application periods)
  • a salaried position as a Doctoral Candidate (fix-term) (only the autumn application period)

Important information for international applicants:

  • Applicants from outside the University of Turku must supply a copy of the degree certificate (diploma) and also a copy of the previous degree certificate, along with a copy of the transcript of records or other qualifications. These copies  must be officially certified (legalised) and if they are not in English, a legalised English traslation is needed.
  • There are required knowledge of languages. Please visit


Before considering applying for the doctoral programme of languages and translation studies, Utuling, please notice that languages that we cover are  
    Finnish / Finno-Ugric Languages
    Scandinavian Languages

In Translation studies you should have a language pair that fit our profile (both of your languages should be included). 

We also have majors in Latin / Greek Philology (Classics) and Phonetics.

From Phonetics one can complete the PhD in Utuling until 31.7. Phonetics has moved to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and prospective doctoral candidates in Phonetics are requested to apply there.

New doctoral candidates are not taken in Russian.
