Pharmaceutical Company MSD and Health Campus Turku Signed a Framework Agreement – Collaboration Strengthens Turku's Position as International Cluster of Expertise in Life Sciences

The City of Turku, Hospital District of Southwest Finland, the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University have made a framework agreement with MSD, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The aim is to create new operational models and modes of treatment especially for optimising the care chain, and this way participate in the social and health services reform. The agreement is very extensive, as it covers the whole health care from primary health care to special health care, academic top research and education.

The company will establish a production line in Turku and begin collaboration with the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The partner program covers collaboration in education, fundamental sciences and commercial manufacturing. Total investment over 7 years will exceed €25 million.

Risky Alcohol Consumption Can Increase at Time of Retirement

However, the increase seems to be temporary as risky drinking often decreases during the retirement. For most pensioners, alcohol consumption remains below the risk levels before and after retirement. The results of the new Finnish study were published in the esteemed Addiction journal.

Researchers Discovered Protein Contributory to Autism Prevents Spread of Cancer

Researchers from Turku Centre for Biotechnology have observed that a protein called SHANK prevents the spread of breast cancer cells to the surrounding tissue. The SHANK protein has been previously studied only in the central nervous system, and it is known that its absence or gene mutations are related to autism. The research was conducted at Turku Centre for Biotechnology.
