School of Languages and Translation Studies

We are a multi-disciplinary expert organization with special expertise in for example multilingual society, academic and cultural communication, speech research and language policy issues. In Master’s studies one can choose from four study paths: Language Learning and Teaching Path, Language Specialist Path, Researcher Path and Translation and Interpreting Path.

We offer high standard undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses based on internationally qualified research. We conduct multidisciplinary study of languages, especially in the following profile areas: the study of cultural and social interaction processes, the study of the Middle Ages and the Modern Times, the study of learning and teaching, grammatical and lexical research, and Philological research. UTULING is the joint Doctoral Programme of the School of Languages and Translation Studies.

The preservation of multilingualism requires maintaining linguistic diversity in international relations, research, arts and in language instruction and cultural education. The educational role of the ten Departments of the School is, thus, also to ever-innovatively remind us of the crucial role of each language in the fields of global culture, society, politics and economy - particularly in relation to the pressures generated by the current trends in Finnish educational, language and media policies.
