Neuroendocrinology of Puberty, Fertility and Metabolism

​Description of Research

Our research group is interested in deciphering the neuroendocrine and molecular mechanisms re-sponsible for the control of puberty and reproductive function, and how these finely interplay with the systems governing body weight and metabolic homeostasis. This fertile area of research has allowed our group to make significant contributions in the field of neurohormonal regulation of puberty onset and fertility, including highly cited original research works and authoritative reviews on kisspeptin physiology, as well as on related neuropeptide systems. More recently, our group has become interested in disclosing the role of novel regulatory mechanisms, such as miRNAs and cellular energy sensors, in the joint control of metabolism and reproduction. This work, together with previous activities focused on the characterization of the reproductive roles of different metabolic hormones, has positioned our group as international reference in the study of metabolic-reproductive interactions, and has paved the way for translational projects, targeting the metabolic and reproductive consequences of obesity-induced hypogonadism, as well as improved strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of common reproductive disorders, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome.
