Department of Mathematics and Statistics leads the Cryptography and Data Security track of the program.
Modern cryptography has two faces. One is design of cryptographic systems for purposes such as transferring confidential messages or authenticating system users. The goal of the other face is to break these systems. Mathematics is essential for both faces. Cryptographic systems are based on mathematical functions, e.g. functions from number theory. Analysis of these systems utilizes, for instance, methods from algebra.
