Conference on Technology Ethics will be held at Turku School of Economics from 20th to 22nd October 2021 as a free hybrid event. Therefore, you can participate online if it seems safer (because of the COVID-19 situation) or a more suitable option for you. Registration for Tethics 2021 closes on 15th October (https://sites.utu.fi/tethics/registration/).

This scientific, multidisciplinary, and casual conference suits extremely well for both researchers and students with diverse academic and professional backgrounds. In addition to four sessions and one Special session “Presentation of ethical decision frameworks using the IFIP Code of Ethics by Don Gotterbarn and Kai Kimppa, Tethics 2021 provides two interesting keynote speeches.

Charles Ess, who is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, Norway, gives his keynote speech on Thursday 21st Oct. His topic is “Can we talk? - Field notes and suggestions for interdisciplinary dialogues, ethics, and citizen engagement. Ess works across the intersections of philosophy, computing, applied ethics, comparative philosophy and religious studies, and media studies with emphases on research ethics, Digital Religion, virtue ethics, social robots and AI. He has published extensively, for example, Digital Media Ethics, 3rd edition, was published in 2020.

Leena Romppainen, who has acted as the president of Electronic Frontier Finland (Effi) since 2018, a board member since 2007, and a volunteer before that, works as IT manager in a company providing managed open source cloud services. She presents her keynote speech “Electronic Frontier Finland: 20 years of digital rights in Finland - Moments of despair and triumph on Friday 22nd Oct. Romppainen is known for her work and participation in political and humanitarian issues, events and organizations. She is an active member of the working group of information policy actors from all parliamentary parties.
