Nordic Workshop on Law and Crises

This workshop discusses and comparatively evaluates the recent Nordic experiences of law and crises in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, and beyond. The themes to be discussed concern the positionality of law and protecting fundamental rights and democracy, in addition to the role of various supervisory powers in safeguarding the rule of law during crises and in managing them. This discussion not only expands our understanding of previous experiences of law during crises, but it also enables us to better prepare for future crises.
The themes of the workshop were discussed previously in the Covid-19 issue of Svensk Juristtidning in 2020. This workshop aims to widen the understanding of these issues and update our knowledge regarding recent developments and evaluations. In 2022, with new information available on both the virus itself and how the legal and judicial constraints functioned during the Covid-19 pandemic, our perspectives and insights on emergency measures need to be re-evaluated. Thus, the developments found during and after the pandemic will be added to the previous findings.
The event is organized jointly by the Faculty of Law at the University of Turku and the research project ‘Just Recovery from Covid-19? Fundamental Rights, Legitimate Governance and Lessons Learned’ (JuRe).
Session I ”Nordic constitutions and responses to Covid-19 and beyond” of the workshop is open to all (onsite or online participation).
