Meet Oshani Weerakoon, a current Master's degree student at the University of Turku and an UTUambassador 2023-2024!
"Hello, I’m Oshani! I am currently studying the Master’s Program in ICT with a specialization in Software Engineering. I am a second year student at UTU and my home country is Sri Lanka.
After completing my Bachelor’s in Information Systems (Hons) in Sri Lanka, I worked as a Business Analyst in the Software and IT industry for a couple of years. And I wanted to widen my knowledge and put myself in somewhere with better access to technology.
So, I chose to travel a little over 4700 miles towards north pole because of the wide variety of courses that UTU offers to its master’s students. It also offers you with the flexibility of choosing our own studies! And after completing one year of studies, I am still confident about the choice I made.
I currently work as a Research Assistant at Department of Computing since Summer 2023. My current research interests include usage of Artificial Intelligence in pedagogical studies, based on which I will(probably) articulate my master’s thesis on. I also work as an ESN (Erasmus Student Network) board member where I meet and greet new people every day!
Turku is a city of opportunities if you are willing to explore. Needless to mention, it is also beautiful place to live in with the River Aura flowing across the city. The famous Turku archipelago is a must to visit!

Oshani's study experience:
I completed my Bachelor's in Sri Lanka, worked in the IT and Software industry there before moving to Finland to study the Master's degree.
The MDP ICT in Software Engineering programme provides you with an opportunity to learn a multitude of subjects, at your own pace. You can choose to learn Data Analytics, Health Technology, Cyber Security and many more as your main module or for elective studies. Needless to say, the content of these courses is well matched with the industry demand. In summary, the MDP ICT in Software Enginnering program will let you quench your thirst for new and updated knowledge in the broad field of Software and IT industry.
I really liked the Advanced Software Engineering and Digital Arts and Interaction Designs courses as they were related to my previous employment and provided me with new knowledge. Also, I had a quite insightful learning experience from Usability, User Experience and Analytics course.
Being a first year master's student, I'm yet to explore the ways on how my future career is going to be with the new knowledge I'm receiving as a student of UTU.
