Phonetics is the study of speech. Research can focus on articulation, acoustics, or perception. The University of Turku’s phonetics department specialises in non-native speech sound learning and bilingualism. Phonetic research combines traditional phonetic experiments with the psychophysiological methods of cognitive brain research, which makes the discipline's research multidisciplinary. The multidisciplinary research themes and methods are also reflected in teaching. The aim of the studies is to educate researchers and phonetics’ experts. The studies also provide valuable professional skills for those working with multilingual people and language learning, such as teachers, speech therapists and language technologists.
