Árru Film Screening and Panel Discussion
How can experiences of intimate harm and violence be brought into the open, and what helps ensure that people are heard and taken seriously? How do land, livelihoods and family histories in Sápmi connect to power, and how do these struggles shape whose voices are heard? What progress has been made on Indigenous rights in Norway, Sweden and Finland, and what roles can art and science play in truth-telling and reconciliation?
Welcome to a screening of Árru at the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy, followed by a panel discussion.
Time: 22 September 2026, film screening 17:30–19:10, and panel discussion 19:15–20:00
Venue: BioRex (Lasipalatsi, Mannerheimintie 22–24, 00100 Helsinki)
Árru explores the growing land exploitation in Sápmi through the lens of a complex family history.
Building on the film’s central themes, the panel discussion will examine recent progress and ongoing challenges in advancing Indigenous rights. Drawing on the work of the contemporary Nordic Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, the discussion will consider whether and how power relations can be transformed, and what role science and art can play in processes of reconciliation.
The panel discussion will feature Elle Sofe Sara, Director of Árru, Aarni Pieski, Sámi playwright, screenwriter and dramaturg, and Daniela Alaattinoğlu, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Turku. The discussion will be hosted by journalist Tuukka Tuomasjukka and will be held in English.
The film screening is only for ticket holders. Tickets can be purchased on the festival’s website. The panel discussion is open to everyone and does not require registration or a ticket.
The panel event is organised by the University of Turku research project From the Margin to the Centre: Rights Development, Transitional Justice and Indigeneity in the Nordics (MARCEN) in cooperation with the film festival. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy (R&A) is Finland’s largest international film festival. The event showcases new and artistically significant films from around the world. The 39th edition of the festival will take place in Helsinki 17–27 September 2026.
