Principles for news publication and sharing

The active, open and transparent communication of the University of Turku makes academic knowledge and the University's news and current topics accessible to both internal and external stakeholders.

The University's news and press releases may be freely shared and published, and are available for media use. We request that the University of Turku is cited as the source.

The University of Turku uses its own communication channels to share information about its research, events, new initiatives, and other current issues.

We communicate research results to the media in a responsible manner. We strive to communicate research results to the Finnish media as impartially and simultaneously as possible. The University Communications or the researcher can also offer news tips based on ongoing research to individual media outlets. Internationally, we primarily publish press releases on research led by a principal investigator from the University of Turku.

The University encourages researchers to communicate their research. The University Communications prepares news and press releases in collaboration with the researcher, who plays an active role in the preparation of the release. The University's intranet contains comprehensive instructions and guidelines on news and press releases. Training in science communication is also available.

Press releases about peer-reviewed original research articles are only sent out after the articles have been published in a scientific journal, and the press release includes a link to the published article.

Technology such as artificial intelligence can be used in news and research communications when appropriate. However, the responsibility for the content and its accuracy always lies with a human. News and press releases are not produced solely by artificial intelligence.

The University's own photographs are primarily used for news and research communications. Images generated by artificial intelligence will only be published if the news topic itself concerns AI or if researchers have used AI specifically for illustrative purposes.

All the University's news and press releases are freely available for non-commercial use. We hope that the University of Turku will be cited as the source.
