Research

My field of research is in vitro diagnostics, particularly technologies and applications suitable for point-of-care diagnostics. I have expertise especially in immunoassay methods and various sensitive and quantitative labeling technologies applicable to them. I have worked extensively with different biomarkers, including those for viral infections, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

I have studied interfering factors present in clinical samples, their impact on the performance of immunoassays, and various technical applications to eliminate them in assays, particularly in rapid tests. My doctoral dissertation focused on sensitive and quantitative lateral flow assays. In my current research, I combine this expertise with microfluidics and 3D-printed materials to develop automated test devices for point-of-care testing of complex diagnostic assays typically requiring central laboratory analysis.

Research interests:

  • High-sensitivity point-of-care applications
  • Immunoassay-based technologies
  • Rapid diagnostics for resource-constrained settings
  • Sustainability of diagnostic devices
  • Lab-on-a-chip
  • Microfluidics
  • 3D-printing

Projects:

  • 1/2025 - 12/2025, The Research Fund of the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, Research project grant “Point-of-care test for the multiplexed and ratiometric detection of iron deficiency associated biomarkers in blood donors”
  • 5/2022 - 6/2023, Business Finland Co-Innovation, Future of Diagnostics – FUDIS (40932/31/2020)
