Johanna Friman’s research is centrally focused on the international law on the use of force, international humanitarian law, international criminal law and the international law on State responsibility. Further areas of research interest include European union law, international human rights law, as well as intersections between law and technology.

Her research investigates constellations of emerging and shifting threat patterns and interlaced perceptions of international security. Her research also examines legal implications of delegation of autonomy and erosion of human agency related to the progressive development of transformative artificial intelligence technologies.
