Studying at the Department of Classics

The study of classical languages provides the tools for understanding texts that have survived from antiquity in their own historical and cultural context. This helps illuminate the various phenomena that are related to language and culture in the world around us, such as the changes in a language and the contacts between languages.

Students of Greek and Latin philology will acquire a comprehensive understanding of classical Greek and/or Latin languages and will become widely acquainted with the world of the people who have written in these languages at different times. These studies include for example ancient literature, philosophy and history.

Classical languages are mostly studied in small groups, and individual guidance is readily available to all of our students. Our courses often involve various student tasks (e.g. short lectures) and different assessment methods such as exams, home exams, learning diaries and essays. All teaching is conducted in Finnish.

Students who are further along in their studies can apply for courses and internships at the Finnish Institute at Athens and the Finnish Institute in Rome. Our students can also minor in classical archaeology and apply for excavation practice on ancient soil.
