BioBlitz - Join in to find and identify the different species at the University of Turku campus!

The Biodiversity Unit will host the BioBlitz Turku 22 event on May 21-22, 2022. A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short time, 24 hours. Do you want to take part?

At the BioBlitz, scientists, students, teachers, families, and other community members work together to get a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity. Our specific area is our UTU campus, and we need the knowledge and skills of all of us.

Families

Hello families!

Do you want to collect tips for making a herbarium? Or do you want to learn to recognize birds based on sound? Or take a part a science workshop, where we will make ice cream with liquid nitrogen?

Now you have the opportunity to develop your own species identification skills. The University of Turku, Biodiversity Unit, is organizing a BioBlitz event this weekend from 21 to 22 May 2022. The purpose of the event is to identify the species on the university's campus. The event is important, because we need to understand the species richness of our urban environment.

There is a lot of things to do, because we will have a lot of side activities. Lectures for audience and microscopes are open to the public use. We have science workshops for kids and adults, quizzes and a lot of science fun. The Museum of Natural Sciences is open overnight and there will be many games to play. At the event, you can have fun with science or get a new hobby, such as nature photography. For the event, you can pick a flower from your own garden and see its pollen.

The event is free and suitable for all ages from shift work to day work, because the event doesn’t sleep. You can participate from a few hours up to 24 hours. There is no registration for the event (except for science workshops). You can arrive at the university hill (yliopistonmäki) at any time and take part to this species identification festivals! The event starts on Saturday 21.5. at 1.00 PM in Natura with a welcome event and the species identification will start at 2.00 PM. The event ends on Sunday 22.5. at 2 PM.

BioBlitz is for everyone! Welcome children and families!

Kartoittaminen tapahtumassa (iNaturalist)

In BioBlitz, findings and identifications are recorded in the iNaturalist application. Everyone can record and describe observations in the system. Experts will recognize unknown species along BioBlitz and afterwards. So feel free to take a picture or sound of your observation and record it in the iNaturalist.
