Self-regulation is supported by cognitive utive functions (EF, e.g., attention/set shifting, working memory/updating, inhibitory control) that develop from infancy through the transition to early adulthood. This developmental process, along with the intergenerational transmission of individual differences, is supported or impeded by parenting behaviors that are themselves influenced by the self-regulation and EF of the parent and child alike. In this presentation, I will provide empirical examples of these processes, and invite a conversation about how to most effectively utilize the findings to improve prevention and intervention efforts that are striving to support healthy self-regulation across the lifespan.
