Journal Guide: Find the right publication channel for your research
ChronosHub Journal Guide (https://turku.chronoshub.io/) is a useful tool that helps you identify the right journal based on various criteria. It also allows you to check if the journal offers any APC discounts and whether it complies with your funder's requirements.
The tool is easy to use and offers multiple features. You can search for journals by subject area, publication forum levels, publisher, or type of open access. You can also restrict your search to journals for which the University of Turku has an open access agreement (Journals with agreements). Additionally, you can filter results to include only journals that meet specific funder requirements. Please note that the tool is only available in English; for instance, the Academy of Finland is listed as the Research Council of Finland.
The Journal Guide includes the current open access agreements between the University of Turku and publishers. For each journal covered by these agreements, you will find the main contract terms, type of agreement, contract period, and a link to the publisher’s and/or FinELib's detailed instructions (Institutional Agreement). You can also see the type of open access and the JUFO level of the journals.
What are open access (OA) agreements?
Article processing charges (APCs) are fees charged by academic journals to cover the publication process costs. These charges are present in both fully open OA journals (gold OA) and partially open OA journals (hybrid OA).
The FinELib consortium, which includes the University of Turku Library, has agreements with publishers that allow for free open access publishing or discounts on APCs. The library has direct agreements with certain publishers.
For free publishing or discounts, the corresponding author of the article must be affiliated with the University of Turku.
Where does the tool’s data come from?
The tool does not require a login. It gathers data from the Journal Checker Tool, Jisc’s open policy finder (formerly Sherpa/Romeo), DOAJ, and the Publication Forum onto one platform. Information about the University of Turku’s open access agreements is integrated into this. The tool features information on over 52,000 journals, although most are not part of the University of Turku’s agreements.
How long is the tool available, and how do I provide feedback?
The tool will be available until the end of 2025. The decision to continue its availability will be based on user feedback, which you can send to kirjasto@utu.fi with the subject "ChronosHub Feedback." Agreement information is regularly supplemented and updated as needed; if you notice any errors or omissions, please report them to openutu@utu.fi.
