Annual report and financial statement for 2025 published – strong year in terms of number of degrees and international funding

The University Board of the University of Turku approved the University’s annual report and financial statement at its meeting on 20 March 2026. The University Collegiate Council will confirm the financial statement at its meeting on 24 April.

In 2025, there were over 23,000 students at the University of Turku, and over 4,000 researchers, teachers, professors, and other experts worked in its eight faculties, four independent units, and support services. 

The University operated from Kevo in Utsjoki on the northern EU border to the observatory located on La Palma of the Canary Islands. Education is mainly concentrated on three campuses: Turku, Pori and Rauma.

EU funding hit a new record

The number of degrees awarded by the University of Turku increased significantly in 2025. Altogether 1,854 bachelor’s degrees were completed, which was an all-time record. The number of completed master’s degrees was 2,011, and the number of students who completed their degrees within target time increased. A record number of 227 doctors completed their studies at the University.

The high-level multidisciplinary research of the University of Turku led to a significant increase in the amount of international competitive research funding granted to the University. The share of EU funding of the supplementary funding rose to 14 percent, totalling €21 million.

The University was also successful in the Research Council of Finland’s funding calls, particularly in terms of funding for researchers and research projects as well as for nationally significant infrastructure. The Research Council of Finland granted the University a total of €51 million. The University also received an approval on a new Centre of Excellence and two new Academy Professors.

The number of peer-reviewed scientific articles and scientific books was high, and an increasing number of them were published on the Publication Forum classification levels 2 and 3. There were 6,983 publications in total.

Positive development in the well-being of the University community

In 2025, the number of full-time equivalents at the University was 2,072, of which 18.4 percent were international staff members. In comparison to the last year, the number of international staff members increased by 10.9 percent. The increase was notable among research personnel, of which 38.8 percent are international staff members. All in all, the number of research personnel grew by 13.4 percent.

There were positive signs regarding the well-being of staff and students during the year. The results of the University improved throughout the workplace well-being survey, and the University of Turku ranked in the top three among Finnish universities in many indices. In the Finnish Bachelor’s Graduate Survey (Kandipalaute), which is a national student feedback survey that examines students’ satisfaction with their university and studying experience, the University reached the 100,000-point threshold for the first time.

University's finances showed a positive trend

The finances of the University of Turku developed positively in 2025. The operative result was €0.5 million last year, while the operative loss was -€3.3 million in 2024. The University's operative result indicates the financial performance of teaching and research.
