Doctoral Programme Openings with the Fudan University

The University of Turku and the Fudan University, Shanghai are joining forces in doctoral training. The project in question is called Sustainable Cities. Its aim is to train specialists who can integrate knowledge from several fields to find solutions that promote a sustainable change of cities.

The Sustainable Cities theme consists of two multidisciplinary doctoral training courses which are organised in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Turku and the School of Social Development and Public Policy of Fudan University. Also, the cooperation includes supporting the student and staff exchange, arranging second opponents for doctoral thesis and creating new contacts.

The activities provide exceptional possibilities for the doctoral candidates.

- Operating in an international and multidisciplinary group gives the doctoral candidates a good starting point for new perspectives and innovative research, tells Coordinator Outi Luova from the Centre for East Asian Studies of the University of Turku.

- Also, representatives from different companies and organisations take part in the training. The aim is to create employment possibilities for the doctoral candidates and create international networks between universities and companies, she continues.

The basis of the programme is in social sciences, but since the courses are multidisciplinary they are also suitable for the students and researchers of humanities, geography, and economic sciences.

In May, doctoral students can apply to two different courses first of which is organised in Shanghai and the second one in Turku. Both of the courses last one week.

At the moment, the partner faculties are discussing expanding the course cooperation to include joint Master and Doctoral programmes.
