10.12.2012

The Economic crisis is not over, but the EU is here to stay, says Vice-President of the European Commission Olli Rehn in the wholly packed Tauno Nurmela –lecture hall.

– It’s easy to forget that EU is fundamentally strong. We are still world’s largest economy, Rehn reminds.

Yet Rehn emphasized the dangers of overspending and noted that the level of unemployment in Europe is unacceptable.

– The debt of the member states will increase, but at slower pace than before, says Rehn.

According to Rehn, integration should be deepened, but it must be done with democratic legitimacy.

The Vice President believes that the Euro-zone will enlarge in the next five years. Rehn welcomed Turkey into EU if and when it can fulfill the membership terms.

In the end of the lecture Rehn send a message to the students.

– Erasmus exchange-program is a fine example of movement of ideas, knowledge and young workers. Programs like these are the cornerstone of the future, Rehn noted.

University of Turku Emphasizes EU Expertise

Rehn´s lecture was the opening session for the 2012-2013 History and Politics of European Integration –programme. In past years such politicians as Alexander Stubb and Paavo Lipponen have given opening speeches.

– This programme provides a historical and unique point of view, which is necessary for everyone, who wishes to understand the present situation of EU, says Program Coordinator, University Teacher Ville Laamanen.

This autumn, the programme turned 5 years. The fundamentals of the program have stayed the same, but focus has been modified and some elements have been added.

– We highlight the Nordic and border regions, Laamanen comments.

 – In teaching, we have increased the linkage of the past events and the present, says University Lector Louis Clerc.
