"I’m Luisa Maria Aguilar Jiménez from Colombia, but you can call me just Luisa and I’m a First-year master’s student in Bioscience: Molecular system biology track at the University of Turku.
In 2026, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Microbiology driven by my curiosity about biological systems and how scientific research can help us better understand and address complex challenges. During my studies, I had the opportunity to participate in research projects involving environmental bioremediation and biomedical research, particularly the study of cancer biomarkers. These experiences helped me develop practical laboratory skills, collaborate with different research teams, and discover how much I enjoy investigating biological questions from different perspectives.
I am particularly interested in molecular biology, genetics, and the mechanisms underlying human health and disease. Although cancer research has been one of my main interests, I am also excited to explore other fields, including antimicrobial resistance and gut microbiota research. I find it fascinating how molecular interactions, microbial communities, and changes in biological systems can influence health and disease. Joining the Master's programme in Bioscience, specialising in Molecular Systems Biology at the UTU, felt like an exciting opportunity to explore these interests while developing new skills in computational biology, data analysis, and systems-level approaches to biological research.
One of the things I value most about studying at UTU is the opportunity to learn beyond my own field. Working with people from different academic backgrounds is allowing me to develop new perspectives, exchange ideas, and approach scientific questions in ways I might not have considered before. essential for both scientific and personal growth.
Looking ahead, I wanted to build a career in biomedical research, using molecular and computational approaches to investigate biological mechanisms relevant to human health. I am excited to discover which research questions will inspire me most as I continue learning and gaining experience. For me, studying at UTU is not only an opportunity to strengthen my scientific knowledge but also to explore new research directions, challenge myself, and contribute to a collaborative international scientific community."
