Esther - Master's student in Cyber Security

Meet Esther Oluwawemimo, a current Master's degree student at the University of Turku and an UTUambassador 2023-2024!

"Hello, my name is Esther, and I am a second-year masters student studying ICT in Cybersecurity, I moved from my home country Nigeria last year after working in the technology industry for three years as a cybersecurity professional. I decided to pursue my master’s degree because in Cybersecurity because the world keeps evolving and I wanted to stay ahead of the curve. University of Turku stood out as a prestigious school to further my studies because of the vast richness of the cybersecurity curriculum that they offer, along with the method of training, the independence of studying and the brilliant minds that get to take you through the course.

The success of my first year is proof that I made the right choice of studying at UTU, I am currently doing my minor studies in Management in Information Security to prepare me for managerial roles after my Masters. There are so many aspects to cybersecurity so I am yet to decide on what my master’s thesis would be focused on, however my interests are in line with social engineering, open-source software, and incident management so I would probably work in one of those areas.

I enjoy relaxing with friends, watching movies and reading novels. I have always been interested in being an influence on women interested in cybersecurity, so it was a privilege for me to be appointed as the vice president of Women in Cybersecurity (WiCys) University of Turku Chapter.

Turku has so many attractions that will make you feel at home, but you must be willing to go out and explore the city to enjoy it. I particularly love to be in my home, but I still make out time to go out and enjoy the beauty of the city.

I would love to hear from you so feel free to contact me via social media for any questions you may have. UTU is a great educational institution and I highly recommend you consider it for your future studies."

Esther's study experience:

Tell more about your programme and why you chose it!

I happen to think that I have a weird mind because what inspired my curiosity for cyber security was my father’s phone being stolen. It drove me to think about what the deeper impact of such action could result to in terms of the effect of data loss and I have been an avid cyber security lover ever since.

What has been the most interesting course for you so far?

My favorite course so far in UTU has been “Systems and Application Security” because the course was filled with practical work and it made me feel like I was working rather than studying, the practical work could be considered as work experience since working in the Cyber Security sector may require working on tasks like malware analysis.

What are your future career plans?

I love to live in the present because the future can be unpredictable, but I work towards becoming a voice and an inspiration to younger generations interested in cyber security.

How does studying Cyber Security at UTU help you reach your career goals?

Studying Cybersecurity at UTU is similar to having work experience, the lectures are both theoretical and practical making it easy to integrate into the work force. Cybersecurity career has multiple branches and the courses taught at UTU makes it possible to have a good foundation for the cybersecurity career path I am interested in pursuing.

To whom would you recommend studying Cyber Security?

I would recommend MDP in Cybersecurity to anyone with an interest in computers, data and technology.
