Eva – Master's student in Molecular Systems Biology

Meet Eva Savulkina, a current master's degree student at the University of Turku and an UTUambassador 2024–2025!

"Hey! I’m Eva, and I am currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Biosciences, specialising in Molecular Systems Biology. I’m from St. Petersburg, Russia, and previously I lived in Tartu, Estonia, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology and Genetics.

Next I decided to continue my studies at the University of Turku, as I valued the flexibility and focus of the Master’s programme, particularly its emphasis on cutting-edge methods in systems biology. Additionally, the vibrant student life in Turku, with its many benefits, large international community, and diverse events organised, simplified my choice.

It’s now my second year at the University of Turku, and so far, I’ve found great motivation to achieve more in the scientific field by meeting people within the UTU community. It feels like the university and the city, in general, are buzzing with start-up ideas, projects, and fresh perspectives on research. There are so many initiatives led by internationals, for internationals. For example, I participate in Drama Klubbi, a drama club created by the staff and students of UTU to help improve our Finnish language skills.

As I continue my academic journey at the University of Turku, I look forward to more study sessions at “Phoenix” Library, deep conversations at Café “Keidas”, Drama Klubbi performances, and the invaluable knowledge gained from life sciences courses and seminars here in Turku 😊 I hope to share these experiences with those who are considering starting a new chapter of their lives in Turku!

Let’s get in touch!"

Eva's study experience

What is your background and how did you end up choosing your programme?

My interest in the biotechnological field developed quite early, as I began exploring genetic hereditary problems during high school. After I graduated my BSc program, I was certain to continue in the same field, but in Finland. This country with its people holds a special place in my heart and I knew it will be a second home to me. When I discovered my programme at UTU, that additionally has a focus on modern omics methods in biotechnology, I immediately started to prepare my application.

What have you found special in the study experience at UTU?

The most special aspect of the study experience at UTU is the highly collaborative nature of communication between professors and students. So far, I’ve noticed that whether you are a Master’s student, a postdoctoral researcher, or a professor, it doesn’t matter as long as you share a passion for the same research questions and contribute to your field.

What are your future career plans?

Current studies shape my career vision a lot. I have started to consider continuing with the PhD program in the biomedical field during my program at University of Turku. There are so many mysteries in biomedicine waiting to be “decoded”.

How do you balance your studies during your free time?

To balance my studies, I love exploring Turku, hiking, especially when taking my camera with me 😉 Another enjoyable experience is participating in the Drama Club in Finnish and taking part in the many student events that the University of Turku has to offer.
