Meet Rukmini Sanabria, a master’s student at the University of Turku and an UTU Ambassador for 2024-2025!
"Hi! I'm Rukmini, a 1st year master's student in the Education and Learning Programme. I'm originally from Peru, where I got my bachelor's degree in Primary Education, but I've had the opportunity to live in many countries such as India, Spain and Austria. My international teaching experience boosted my passion for multicultural education, my main research focus.
While I enjoy teaching, I am interested in working for an international organization that advocates for inclusive education. During my bachelor's studies, I heard about the outstanding Finnish educational system, which is why I decided to explore master's programmes in Finland. Among the various international programmes, EdLearn stood out to me because of its flexibility in allowing students to explore and build their own career paths, as well as its strong dual-focus foundation in education.
What I love most about studying at UTU is the wide range of activities, spaces and services the university offers to support our well-being. I particularly found the career guidance and the psychological appointments really useful to manage my adaptation. I also enjoy the CampusSport's classes. I found them entertaining and helpful to face the harsh winter! And as a Latina, I’m a big fan of the Zumba classes!"
Rukmini's study experience:
I completed my Bachelor’s in Primary Education in Peru, my home country. I also participated in a short exchange programme at the University of North Texas (USA). Following graduation, I gained experience through internships at primary schools in Spain and Austria.
Since my undergraduate studies, I’ve been interested in the Finnish education system and thought a master’s programme in Finland would be my next step in my career as an international educator. After reviewing all the international programmes related to Education on the ”Studyinfo” website, I found that EdLearn was the ideal match for me because of its strong research foundation, its focus on both the micro and macro levels of education, and its flexibility to explore and build diverse career paths within the education sector.
At UTU, I really enjoy being part of an international environment. It’s just fantastic to meet people from different parts of the world, with different languages, backgrounds, ways of thinking... but at the same time, it amazes me a lot how much we have in common, for example, we are all struggling with the Finnish language 😅
I’ve discovered a new career path I hadn’t considered before, or even thought I could fit in. I’m currently in a phase of deeper self-exploration, and what I value most is that I don’t feel alone in this transition. Thanks to the support of my professors, the university’s career guidance services, and some friends, I feel I can leave the classrooms for a while and start building a leadership career within the international education sector.
During the summer, I loved cycling around the city, but as the days are becoming colder, I’ve started joining CampusSport classes. I’m especially a big fan of the Zumba sessions, as they really revive my Latino spirit! I also enjoy visiting my friends and cooking together with them.
