The main research interests of the Department Folkloristics include contemporary culture, popular culture, belief traditions, oral history, memory studies, narrative studies and cultural heritage research.

The Department of Folkloristics co-operates with other departments of Folkloristics in Finland and other cultural institutions. These include Folkloristics at the Åbo Akademi University, University of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland and the University of Jyväskylä. 

Folkloristics provides the means to understand, interpret, explain and utilize all forms of cultural expression that people use when communicating with each other.
