KiVANET: study languages online

The University of Turku is part of the KiVANET network, which offers a wide range of online language courses from CEFR levels A1 to C1, with learning pathways designed in accordance with e-learning principles. 

The courses are available free of charge to all students of the universities and universities of applied sciences that are part of the KiVANET network. 

KiVANET offers online language courses throughout the year, including in the summer. 

KiVANET courses

The KiVANET network offers courses in languages including Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Estonian, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and Hungarian. The University of Turku organises KiVANET courses in Korean. Please note that for many courses, the language of instruction is Finnish, but there are some courses that are taught in English or in the target language.

For up-to-date information about the current course offering, go to the KiVANET website. The language of instruction is indicated in the course description for each course. 

Registering for KiVANET courses

The courses offered by the KiVANET network are available through the cross-institutional study service. 

Please note that to be able to register through the cross-institutional study service, you need to have a Finnish Personal Identification Code (henkilötunnus or hetu). 

University of Turku degree students can register for the courses in Peppi - see below for instructions. Students from other higher education institutions: please see your institution's instructions for registering for cross-institutional studies. 

Instructions for University of Turku degree students  

  • See the KiVANET website for the course offering for the current semester, as well as up-to-date information about course registration dates. Have a look at the course descriptions for the individual courses (noting also the language of instruction) and select which course you would like to take.
  • Log into Peppi using your University of Turku username and password.
  • Go to the Selecting studies tab of your Personal Study Plan (PSP). Click the magnifying glass icon to open the search window, find the KiVANET course you want to take, and add it to your PSP. To find courses offered by other higher education institutions, select Cross-institutional study underneath the search box and type in the name of your selected KiVANET course. For courses offered by the University of Turku, select Home organisation.   • To register for the course, go to the Enrollments tab of your Personal Study Plan in Peppi. You can only register during the registration period - see the KiVANET website for up-to-date information about when course registration opens and closes.
  • Once you have completed the course, the credits will be transferred automatically to the University of Turku Peppi - there is no need to apply for credit transfer.
