Double Degree
School of Languages and Translation Studies, Department of French Studies
Double degree: a degree from two universities
The Department of French at the University of Turku participates in offering a double degree programme together with Åbo Akademi University (Franska språket och litteratur) and the University of Nantes (Département des Sciences du langage). The degree is based on the model of double degree, which means that the student graduates both from the University of Turku and the University of Nantes.
Targeted learning outcomes
Content of the double degree will lead to expertise in Linguistics and in French as a Foreign Language (FLE). The departments and their researchers involved in the double degree programme are specialized in different subjects, and hence the double degree offers a diverse and extensive course selection. In each one of the universities, the course selection is based on their own research strengths. The strengths of these partner universities complement each other and offer the students an excellent scientific basis for their studies. The double degree also provides an opportunity to work internationally.
General description
The double degree is offered by the Department of French at the School of Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Turku and Le département de Sciences du langage de l’UFR de Lettres et Langage at the University of Nantes. After completing this double degree programme, the students receive both a French Master’s degree and a Finnish Master’s degree. At the Department of French, the studies consist of courses from the Degree Programme in Language Learning and Teaching and from the Language Specialist Degree Programme, thought mainly in French (see the Study Guide). The students can also take Master’s level courses in French language and literature at Åbo Akademi University as cross-studies via the national cross-study service RIPA. The studies may include online courses as well, which supports the strategic principle of digital teaching and learning.
Extent of the double degree is 120 ECTS, including a Master’s thesis of 30 ECTS. It takes two academic years to complete the double degree. Each degree programme gives the students eligibility to apply for doctoral studies.
The double degree programme includes one compulsory semester at the University of Nantes.
