A database of pronouns and animal characters in original and translated Finnish picture books for children
Key words: literary language, fiction
This is a digital database containing data from 531 Finnish-language picture books from 2005–2022 with humanized animal protagonists. The database includes the publication data of the books with the coding of the human features of the characters, their animal species, the pronoun (hän, se) used, and documentation of the variation in pronoun use with photos taken from the books. The data were used to compare pronoun variation in translated and non-translated language by Priiki & Kolehmainen (2025). In the future, the database can, e.g., help in data selection for further studies.
