RoboLang: robot-assisted foreign language learning interactions (English)

Keywords: spoken language, verbal interaction, human-robot interaction

The data consists of video-recorded robot-assisted language learning sessions in a foreign language (English). The corpus was collected in spring 2019 in four Swedish-speaking primary schools in Finland. Each session took 15–20 minutes. There were 111 pupils, aged 10–13, who participated in learning sessions of 2 to 4 learners, guided by their teacher.

The digital tool used was NAO6 robot that was operated with the Elias language learning application (Utelias OY). NAO is a small, social humanoid robot with ability to move, with voice recognition and gaze recognition and speech synthesiser.

In recorded verbal interaction sessions, pupils in learning tasks with the robot focused on English vocabulary related to family and colors. This was the learners' first learning experience with a social robot in a school context.

The data was collected as part of RoboLang research project.
