The Faculty of Medicine celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2023. In honor of the centenary year, the faculty organises a Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees, which can be attended by doctors graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Turku by the beginning of 2023.
The main event of the anniversary year of the Faculty of Medicine is the faculty’s own Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees, which will be arranged from 25 to 27 May 2023.
The faculty’s Ceremonial Conferment will be organised in accordance with the traditions of the University of Turku. Celebrations will begin with a Sword Sharpening Ceremony on Thursday, and continue on Friday with the Conferment Ceremony, a Ceremonial Conferment service at the Cathedral followed by a Banquet at Turku Castle. The festivities will continue on Saturday with a cruise to Naantali. All interested parties can attend the honorary doctoral lectures which are organised as part of the Conferment Ceremony programme.
The registration for the event has been closed on 31 January. The registration was open to all doctors graduated from the Faculty of Medicine by the beginning of 2023.
Doctors who attended the Ceremonial Conferment over 50 years ago will be conferred with the title of jubilee doctor at the event.

Information about the Ceremonial Conferment of the Doctoral Degrees
Everyone attending the Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees needs to have a doctoral hat and a doctoral sword in order to participate.
The doctor orders the hat and sword themselves. We recommend ordering the hat and sword as soon as possible. They are made by hand, so the time of delivery can be long. You also need to book an appointment for the measurements with the hatmaker.
Doctoral hat
The doctoral hat and emblem are determined by the university and the degree (which doctor of science). When ordering a hat, the hat manufacturer must be informed of the degree and university. At the University of Turku, all the doctors have a black hat except the doctors of law, who have a burgundy hat.
The emblem varies according to the degree. For example, the doctors of philosophy use the general emblem of the doctor of philosophy, regardless of the faculty.
The prices listed below for the doctoral hats include a hat box and the emblem.
The hat has to be marked with a self-adhesive name sticker (inside the hat) for the Conferment Ceremony. The organisers take no responsibility over possible markings left inside the hat by the sticker. You can also mark the hat yourself, but note that the name sticker has to stay firmly in the hat to ensure that you will be presented with your own hat at the ceremony.
