Services of the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy
Our equipment and methods can be applied in various projects in medical and biological research as well as in materials sciences.
- tissue pieces
- cells
- bacteria
- viruses
- macromolecules
- polymers
- nanoparticles
- Plastic embedding and ultrathin sectioning for conventional TEM
- Correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM)
- Immuno electron microscopy
- Electron tomography
- Negative staining
Our laboratory technicians prepare samples for imaging with different EM-techniques. The researcher collects and fixes the samples and brings them to our specimen preparation laboratory for further processing. We can prepare specimens for both transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopies.
Training for independent use of TEM is available only for frequent users. For projects that are limited in duration or scope imaging is assisted by our technical staff. MSc students are trained for independent use only in special cases. Technical support is available during imaging for all users.
SEM imaging can be arranged in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
We help researchers in all questions related to electron microscopy. We give help in all steps of an EM project from experiment planning to result interpretation.
New users willing to use EM are asked to contact tem@utu.fi.
Opening a project
Send Electron Microscopy project request form found in the Services page of OpenIRIS to open a project to the EM laboratory.
Collection of samples for EM
Download instructions for sample collection.
Fixative stock solutions are available in the specimen preparation laboratory.
Sample form must be returned together with the samples.
Fees
The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and some of our other EM resources are booked in OpenIRIS.
