SpacEconomy

The SpacEconomy project, funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC) operating under the Academy of Finland, strengthens Finland’s position in the rapidly growing global space economy. The project supports Finland’s strategic goal of becoming the world’s most attractive environment for space activities by 2030.

Through strategic research collaboration and practical solutions, SpacEconomy enhances Finland’s competitiveness, addresses challenges related to climate change and regional inequality, and promotes sustainable growth and resilience in the digital and green transition.

The project brings together Finland’s fragmented space ecosystem by fostering innovation, sustainability, and cross-sectoral collaboration. It unites experts from science, industry, business, and the public sector to boost economic growth, productivity, and societal well-being.

SpacEconomy is implemented by Finnish universities and research institutions that study and develop the space sector: Aalto University, University of Helsinki, Finnish Meteorological Institute, National Land Survey of Finland, Tampere University, University of Turku, and University of Vaasa. Communications for the project are managed by Kupla Productions Ltd. The multidisciplinary consortium combines deep expertise in space technologies, artificial intelligence, economics, sustainability, governance, and social sciences.

The University of Turku leads the work package on strategic foresight, examining the long-term economic and societal welfare impacts of Finland’s space economy.The project is coordinated by Tampere University.

SRC funding currently covers the first three years of the project, with an option to extend for an additional three years, until the end of September 2031.
