Researchers at the Finland Futures Research Centre of the University of Turku examined the views of young adults (aged 18–29) on desired futures for Finland’s economy in 2040. A total of 87 young people from different parts of Finland and across various educational levels participated in the study.
Finnish young adults’ hopes for the future development of the economy and society focus on solidarity, sustainable development, a connection with nature, and personal development. The participants felt that future well-being cannot be based on continuous economic growth and the over-consumption of natural resources. According to the young participants, achieving the desired futures would, however, require fundamental societal changes, such as reforming democratic structures, fostering a healthier public debate, and promoting decision-making that is based on research evidence and actively involves citizens.
The young participants also introduced broader societal themes into the economic discussion, expressing a desire to address issues such as social security, public services, mental health, entry into working life, and coping at work as integral parts of economic development, which cannot be measured solely by GDP growth. According to the researchers, the results of the study give a voice to young adults whose perspectives have been scarcely represented in economic debates focused on crises and the lack of growth.
What is a future image?
Future images are snapshots of the future, created in foresight processes to outline alternative development pathways. They make it easier to imagine alternatives to the present situation, and different future images can also be seen as guiding the actions of individuals, organizations, and societies. The diversity of future images helps to build a more sustainable future.
