13 Honorary Doctors and About 100 Doctors Are Conferred

Doctors and Honorary Doctors are conferred on the threshold of summer in the University of Turku.

​Scientific accomplishments were emphasized more than before when the faculties selected their honorary doctor applicants. Ten of the honorary doctors are researchers.

The Doctoral Conferment Ceremony of all the faculties is held from 30th May to 1st June. The academic procession, which is held on the second day, is the most visible part of the celebration in the city. It starts from the Turku Concert Hall and goes along the street Aninkaistenkatu to the cathedral.

Graduated doctors can enroll to the ceremony by the end of February.

World-class Experts

Faculty of Humanities is the only one conferring only one honorary doctor. The honorary tittle goes to Professor Peter Kivisto from the Augustana Collage, United Sates, who is esteemed researcher of multiculturalism.

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences confers Estonian Academic, Professor Jaan Einasto, who has observed the great scale of the universe and significantly affected on the recovery of the dark matter and Professor Li-Rong Zheng from the Fudan University, China, whose field of research is internationally very current the Internet of Things.

Faculty of Medicine confers the expert of sudden infant death syndrome and childhood effects on adult health Professor Terry Dwyer from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Australia and Professor Malcom G. Parker from the Institute of Reproductive & Development, England, who is known as the finder of corepressor RIP140. RIP140 is evaluated to play a key role in the fat accumulation and start of obesity.

Faculty of Law confers a strong supporter of the Finnish legal praxis, Judge of the European Court of Justice Allan Rosas and Professor of the University of Lapland Juha Karhu, who was among the first to bring the basic right discussion to the civil law.

Turku School of Economics has selected Professor Paul M. Healy from Harvard Business School and Independent Director Seppo Remes to be their honorary doctors. Professor Healy has influenced in a revolutionary manner on where and how and the financial statement reports of the companies are used. Director Remes, who is the best known Finnish businessman in the Russian business life, has helped Finnish people from the civil service and the research community to get connected to Russia.

Faculty of Social Sciences confers two honorary doctors: The Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Docent Erkki Tuomioja is one of the most significant Finnish social forces, who follows, does and studies history. Professor Jaap Dronkers from the Maastricht University, The Netherlands, is one of the most distinguished researchers of education and divorces in Europe.

Faculty of Education has selected Professor Roger Säljö from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Agnès van Zanten, who is the Research Director of the Parisin Institute of Political Science, France to be their honorary doctors. Professor Säljö has led the education research into new directions since the seventies. Director van Zante has recently studied the significance of education in the formation of elite, free school choices, the inequality of education and social movement.
