A Record Number of Doctors Graduated In 2012

21.01.2013

Altogether, 182 doctors graduated from the University of Turku in the year 2012. Also, the number of completed Bachelor´s and Master`s degrees was increased.

The number of the graduated doctors is higher than ever before. The amount is thirty more than in the previous year.

- This is a really significant growth. For example, the intensification of the researcher school system has had an effect on the good result, tells Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö, who is responsible for education.

Also, the amount of graduated Bachelors and Masters is increasing. In the year 2012, 1537 people completed their Bachelor´s degree and 1453 people Master´s Degree.

- Putting time limits on studying is starting to have an effect and that is why there are so many new Masters. In the past few years, the guidance of studies and qualifications has also been emphasized, which is starting to show, Pyykkö ponders.

The increasing amount of graduates has a clear financial influence on the university. The Ministry of Education gives funding to the Finnish universities based on a certain pattern and the number of graduated people plays a key role in it. The amount of the grant is still open. The possible increase of the funding is affected by the graduation numbers of the other universities.

- I want to send thanks to the faculties: good work! Students, teachers and administration have worked hard together, Pyykkö says pleased.
