Applications to University’s International Master’s Degree Programmes Doubled

02.02.2018

The most popular programmes were Global Innovation Management, Biomedical Sciences, Information Security and Cryptography, Education and Learning, and Futures Studies, which received altogether 733 applications. All in all, the international Master’s degree programmes received 1,116 applications from 98 countries, whereas the number of applications in the previous year was only 502.

The applicants could apply to several programmes in the application round and there were altogether 968 individual applicants. 72 percent of the applicants come from non-EU/EEA countries, the most from Pakistan (93), Ghana (76), Bangladesh (74), Nigeria (62), and India (55). Most applications from within the EU and EEA countries came from Finland.

In the autumn of 2017, Finnish universities introduced tuition fees to students from non-EU/EEA countries. The impact of the tuition fees was great: the number of applicants to the University of Turku was reduced by half in 2017 when compared to the previous year. Now the numbers have returned to the same level as they were in 2016.

Similar to the previous year, there were 13 Master’s degree programmes open for application. The largest number of applications, altogether 733, were received by Global Innovation Management, Biomedical Sciences, Information Security and Cryptography, Education and Learning, and Futures Studies Programmes. The same programmes were among the most popular ones also last year.

According to Head of Admission and Student Affairs Mari Kähkönen, the growth in the number of applications has been excellent. The number has risen from the low level caused by the introduction of tuition fees to their earlier levels, and it is a positive sign for the international transnational education of the University of Turku.

– Our programmes clearly attract applicants. The increase can be partly explained with the easy application system: the entire application process, including the enclosures, was carried out online, unlike in the previous years. I believe that we will be able to select good and motivated students from amongst this great number of applicants.
