ARWU: University of Turku among the World's Best 500 Universities

The University of Turku was ranked among the 401–500 best universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities this year.

​The global Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2017 was published on 15 August. On the so-called Shanghai ranking, the University of Turku was among the 401–500 best universities.

Earlier in August, ARWU published a ranking of academic subjects in which the Institute of Dentistry at the University of Turku was ranked as the 18th best in the world. Several subjects at the University of Turku were successful in the subject ranking, which in turn reflects the multidisciplinarity of high-quality research.

Harvard University in the United States kept its position at the top of the list. Of the European universities, the University of Cambridge from Great Britain received the best ranking (3rd). Also among the top ten from the European universities was the University of Oxford from Great Britain (7th). The University of Copenhagen kept the best ranking (30th) of the Nordic universities.

Of the Finnish universities, five were ranked among the top 500. The most successful was the University of Helsinki which was 56th in the ranking. The University of Eastern Finland was ranked among the 301–400 best Universities, and Aalto University and the University of Oulu were placed in the 401–500 category.

The ranking is published annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, and it is compiled by the Jiao Tong University which was placed in the 101–150 category in this year's ranking. The so-called Shanghai ranking has been published since 2003. There are over 10,000 universities in the world.
