20.07.2015

The University of Turku is among the best 1.6 percent in the latest global university ranking published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The high quality of research is specified as a particular strength of the university.

The CWUR ranking includes over 25,000 universities that grant higher university degrees. The University's placement in the ranking rose to 383. In 2014, the University was placed 391st.

Among the Finnish universities, the University of Turku was third best after the University of Helsinki and University of Eastern Finland.

The ranking highlighted the high quality of research at the University of Turku. According to the indicators that specify the quality of research, the University of Turku was second best in Finland after the University of Helsinki. One indicator of high quality is that research results are published in prestigious and influential scientific journals.

 – We are a significant, visible and high-level international science University, so the result was expected. Over the past few years, we have supported research by developing our Graduate School, among other things. Our researchers are talented and ambitious and they are offering their research publications to prestigious journals and significant publishers with a good success rate, says Vice Rector Kalle-Antti Suominen, who is responsible for research at the University of Turku.

CWUR has compiled university rankings since 2012, but for the first two years it listed only the 100 best universities in the world. CWUR was created as the first world university ranking that measures the quality and effectiveness of education, the prestige of the faculty staff, and the quality of research with different kinds of accounts and databases.
