Deputy Mayor Ritva Viljanen Appointed to the University Board

University Collegiate Council has appointed Deputy Mayor Ritva Viljanen (LL.M., M. Pol. Sc.) as a new member of the University Board who comes from outside the university community.

​Ritva Viljanen (born 1958) has graduated from
 the University of Turku as Master of Laws and Master of Political Sciences. She has been the Deputy Mayor of the City of Helsinki and in charge of educational and cultural affairs since 2012. Before becoming the Deputy Mayor, Viljanen was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior and Director General of the Population Register Centre, among other things.

The University Board is comprised of ten members. In addition to Viljanen, members who come from outside the university community are CEO Matti Rihko (Chair), Doctor of Political Science Cay Sévon and Professor Jaakko Astola from the Tampere University of Technology. Members from the university include Professors Anne Kovalainen and Jyrki Heino, Chief Information Security Officer Mats Kommonen, Docent Maija Peltola and student members Jukka Koivisto and Aku Kähkönen.

The Board’s term of office began at the beginning of 2014 and lasts until the end of 2017. However, the term of the student members is two years.

The University Collegiate Council appointed Viljanen to replace Emeritus Governor Rauno Saari who resigned from the Board. The Chair of the University Collegiate Council is Professor Kari Lukka.
