Dr GERALD DOHERTY IN MEMORIAM

29.01.2014

The Department of English has learnt with great sadness of the death of Gerald Doherty, who taught in the Department as Lecturer from 1972 to his retirement in 1994.

Many of our former students will vividly remember his inspired teaching of English literature and perhaps even more the enthusiasm of his classes on two of his favourite novelists, D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce. He was a recognized authority on these authors and continued writing about their works until his death. His last article is yet to appear posthumously in the James Joyce Quarterly. The Department celebrated Gerald’s 80th birthday in 2009 with a jubilee seminar in his honour and a display of his publications. He will be sorely missed.
