Eight disciplines of the University of Turku rank among the 200 best in the world in the university comparison of the QS World University Rankings. Comparing with last year’s result, the university raised the number of its disciplines on the list.

In the British university comparison of 2013, University of Turku has been ranked between 101 and 150 in the fields of philosophy and psychology. Pharmacology, education, languages and translation studies, medicine, law and environmental sciences are placed between 151 and 200.

New disciplines that made it to this year’s listing are law, psychology and languages and translation studies. Last year, the list included five disciplines from the University of Turku and in 2011 three disciplines.

– The direction is good. The high level of our disciplines has now clearly been noted in the world. It is especially gratifying that disciplines from both human sciences and medicine and natural sciences succeed. Behind this success is hard, long-term work done by researchers and teachers, remarks Rector Kalervo Väänänen.

Factors affecting the position on the ranking list are for example academic peer review, substential employers’ evaluations of the university, student-staff ratio, number of citations and internationality.

The evaluations published now are discipline-specific, and QS publishes its evaluations of the universities as a whole later this year. University of Turku has been successful in international comparisons. Last year, the University was ranked 211th in QS Ranking and in the ARWU-ranking carried out by Shanghai Jiao Tong University the University of Turku was placed among the top 300–400.
