17.03.2022

Faculty of Technology has appointed two new professors for mechanical engineering. Yong se Kim has been appointed as a professor for industry 4.0 and Armin Wehrfritz as an associate professor for thermal science.

Professorship for industry 4.0 has been donated by Elomatic and Cadmatic. The professorship for thermal science has been donated by Turku Chamber of Commerce’s Uusikaupunki section, Lounaisrannikon Osuuspankki Foundation, City of Uusikaupunki, Vahterus, City of Laitila, Vakka-Suomen Voima/VSV Konserni, Pilkington Automotive Finland, Säästöpankki Kalanti-Pyhäranta, Yara Suomi, Vakka-Suomen Puhelin, Finn Lamex Safety Glass, Municipality of Kustavi, Plc Uutechnic Group and Dewaco.

The new professors bring along latest research as well as international level expertise and networks to research topics such as data-driven customer experience design and zero-carbon fuel combustion concepts. The new knowledge extends the research co-operation possibilities with industry in southwestern Finland and enables teaching of new industry relevant topics to our students.

– I am very excited and happy to welcome Yong Se Kim and Armin Wehrfritz to our department and faculty. Their knowledge and experience is very important in developing this new department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, says Head of the Department Jussi Kantola.

Armin Wehrfritz, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering

Armin Wehrfritz obtained his Master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and his doctoral degree from Aalto University, Finland. During his doctoral studies, he was a visiting researcher in the Combustion Technology group at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. For his postdoctoral research, he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he held an appointment as Research Associate at The University of New South Wales.

Armin’s primary research interests are in high-fidelity numerical simulations of multiphase and chemically reacting flows, in particular with a focus on low- or zero-carbon fuels such as hydrogen. Aside from his research in energy technology, he has an interest in numerical and computational methods for high-performance computation, as well as data-driven and machine learning methods.
