This is the FiDPEL Newsletter. Monthly newsletters are sent to all subscribers of the FiDPEL mailing list and published on the FiDPEL website.

Notifications of maternal and paternal leaves to your own university

In a new model of doctoral training, universities are to take a stronger role in resourcing their own doctoral training. Each doctoral candidate now belongs to the graduate school and doctoral program of their own university. The new FiDPEL is a network of doctoral programs, enabling diverse forms of cooperation over the borders of universities.

Now that the salary payments are not coordinated by FiDPEL anymore, it is very important that e.g. maternal leaves or other issues concerning your employment contract are communicated to your own university. Concrete counting of paid months saved, for example, is done at your own university. When needed, coordinator of FiDPEL can of course be consulted, but if you are having maternal of paternal leaves, they must be communicated primarily to your own university.

Travel grants suggested to be invoiced as soon as possible after the trip

There have been calls for applications for travel grants in subprogrammes during the autumn. One popular target is the annual Finnish Educational Research Association (FERA) Conference on Educational Research which is held in Jyväskylä, 21–22 November, 2013. The programme will include parallel paper sessions, methodological workshops and pre-conference seminars in which educational research can be presented in English, Swedish or Finnish. Hopefully members of FiDPEL will be well represented there!

It is suggested that the travel grants are invoiced as soon as possible after the trip. This is due to the fact that all the transactions concerning the travel grants should be made before the end of the year. In case your trip is in December or you are afraid that you are not able to invoice on time, please contact the coordinator of your own subprogramme. In some cases the payments can also be done even before the actual trip.

Please also note that the subprogrammes will no longer allow travel grants next year. In the future, doctoral candidates can apply for travel grants i.g. from their own universities and faculties.
