Introducing New International Master’s Degree Programme: Physical and Chemical Sciences

14.12.2017

The Master’s Degree Programme in Physical and Chemical Sciences provides students with skills to critically evaluate information, conduct their own research projects, and tackle scientific and technological issues both independently and as a member of a group.

There are four specialisation tracks in the Physical and Chemical Sciences Master’s Degree Programme. The tracks are Astronomy and Space Physics, Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics, and Theoretical Physics. Students can choose a track that is most fitting to their own interests and previous academic achievements.

– Teaching in the Programme is very practical. Students will participate in research group projects right after the Programme begins, and they will actively take part in research, describes Professor Petriina Paturi from the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

– When the students finish the Programme, they already have concrete experience from the field. The goal is for the students to become a part of the science community early on and also do meaningful research, adds Professor Carita Kvarnström from the Department of Chemistry.

Writing a Master’s thesis is an important part of the degree, and the objective of the thesis is to combine the students’ work in a research group with their independent studies.

– The students learn to use state-of-the-art machinery and equipment and to measure and analyse data they have produced. The students’ theses are purposeful in the sense that they are a part of actual research, and provide new and useful information to the field, say Professor Kvarnström and Professor Paturi.

The Programme provides a strong foundation for continuing to doctoral studies and a career in research and development. Masters of Science can also find work in various industries, such as biotech and materials companies, medical and high-tech industries, game development and datamining.

Applying for the Master’s Degree in Physical and Chemical Sciences at the University of Turku is a great opportunity to receive high quality education, use state-of-the-art equipment, and study in an inspiring, multidisciplinary environment. The application period begins on 1 December and ends at 31 January.
