Annual seminar of KASVA on 20th-21st May in Kulttuurikeskus Sofia, Helsinki – further information and registration

THEME OF THE SEMINAR: THEORY AND PRACTICE IN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH

The Finnish Doctoral Training Network on Educational Sciences KASVA and The Subprogramme on Developmental Work Research and Adult Education (DWRAE/KEHTY) organise the annual seminar of KASVA. This year, the seminar will reflect the perennial question of social and educational research, the relationship between theory and practice. The following kinds of questions will be discussed:

  • In which way educational theories influence in educational practices and what they learn from practices?
  • What kinds of methodologies are able to combine theory and practice in a fruitful way?
  • Has the ”practice turn” taken place in educational sciences in the same way as in other social sciences?
  • What kinds of options of reflecting the relationship between theory and practice do you have in your dissertation?

Professor Davide Nicolini (Warwick University, UK) gives the first keynote lecture ”Practice-based research: A new phase in studies of work and learning”. Professors  Yrjö Engeström, Reijo Miettinen and Jaakko Virkkunen give the second key lecture entitled ”Institutional learning and formative interventions: Toward societally relevant educational research”.

Change in the coordinator's financing and work description

The KASVA network has been coordinated until now from the Department of the Education, University of Turku. However, since the beginning of the year 2014, there is no more direct financing for the coordination of the KASVA network. In this way, the coordinator's work contribution cannot focus any more only on the KASVA. In addition, the work of the coordinator now also includes the coordination of the two doctoral programmes of the faculty of education, OPPI and KEVEKO. Thus, the coordination of KASVA Network will be done as a part-time work.

Despite the changes, the director and the coordinator of KASVA, as well as the University of Turku will remain committed for the maintaining and developing of the KASVA network. The plans to strengthen the network and making official are prepared.

Great beginning of spring!

The next FiDPEL Newsletter will be published at the end of March.  If you have something that you wish to be communicated to the KASVA members, please notify the coordinator.
