Greetings from the KASVA Annual Seminar
The annual seminar of KASVA was held in Helsinki on May 20-21. Altogether 31 doctoral students and 15 supervisors or members of the KASVA board participated in the seminar. In the website of KASVA, you’ll find the PowerPoint/Prezi-slides of the presentations of both Davide Nicolini, as well as that of Yrjö Engeström, Reijo Miettinen and Jaakko Virkkunen (see http://www.utu.fi/fi/yksikot/edu/yksikot/kasva/vuosiseminaari/Sivut/home.aspx). A link to the video recording of both presentations will be set in the webpage of the seminar during week 23.
KASVA will open a call for travel grants
The KASVA board had its meeting in the annual seminar on May 20th. In the meeting, the board decided to offer travel grants for the doctoral students of KASVA. The travel grants are directed primarily to those members who receive financing from KASVA (based on the decisions for 2012-2015) or who otherwise work full time with their thesis. The travel grants are admitted to conferences and other study visits abroad only.
Dissertations of the KASVA members
Mira Kalalahti, VTM, KM will defend the doctoral dissertation entitled "Muuttuvat koulutusmahdollisuudet - Nuorten sosiaaliset hierarkiat ja koulumenestys" (Changes in equality of educational opportunity - social hierarchies and school achievement of the young) in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, on 5 June 2014 at 12:00. The public examination will take place at the following address: Helsingin yliopiston päärakennus, auditorium XIV, Unioninkatu 34, 3. krs. Assistant Professor Tero Järvinen from the University of Turku will serve as the opponent, and Professor Antti Karisto as the custos. The dissertation will be published in the series Sosiaalitieteiden laitoksen jukaisuja . The dissertation is also available in electronic form through the E-thesis service.
