23.04.2018

Doctoral Candidate Khalil Shahramian from the Institute of Dentistry of the University of Turku made it to the finals of the Three Minute Thesis competition for European universities. Shahramian and three other doctoral candidates will compete to win the Coimbra Group 3MT Competition on 1 June.

In the Turku competition, Shahramian won both the votes of the judges and the audience.

Khalil Shahramian admits that the news evoked a feeling of pure joy, but it did not extinguish his hunger for victory.

– It will be the best feeling when we win the whole competition. And by saying we, I want to highlight that it’s not only about me. We’ve had a great team putting this presentation together: the University of Turku, Institute of Dentistry, Dean, professors, all the supporters. And, especially, my best friend Tarek Omran, who won the Three Minute Thesis competition of the University of Turku last year. He’s given me a lot of tips and instructions, Shahramian says.

Three Minute Thesis is an academic competition created by the Australian University of Queensland. In the competition, the doctoral candidate summarises the essence of their research in three minutes with the help of a single PowerPoint slide.

Shahramian presented an improved method of attaching a new tooth to replace a missing one, which is being developed in the University of Turku.

The winners of the national competitions competed with their video presentations for making it to the Coimbra Group finals. The representatives of each participating university voted for their favourites from among the 21 national winners to compete in the Coimbra Group finals.

Shahramian will compete alongside Jason Mario Dydynski from the University of Tartu, Nicola Seitz from the University of Würzburg, and Konstantina Theofanoupoulou from the University of Barcelona.

– Together with my friend, Tarek Omran, we have carefully watched through the video and found a few points that could still be improved, Shahramian says.

The finals will be held 1 June in Salamanca, Spain.
