The University of Turku, the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, Turku University of Applied Sciences and National Institute for Health and Welfare THL will receive new teaching, research and diagnostics facilities in the Medisiina D building, which will be built in the Kupittaa campus area.

Medisiina D will be built at Kiinanmyllynkatu 10. The building site is limited by the street network in the south, the university hospital buildings in the west and north and in the east by the motorway and railway. The place is a central area of health and welfare expertise in Turku.

The gross area of the building will be approximately 26,470 GSM. The University Properties of Finland Ltd is the property developer of Medisiina D. The construction will start in August 2015 and be finished in the summer of 2018 according to the preliminary schedule. The building will be used by the University of Turku, the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, the University of Applied Sciences, and the National Institute for Health and Welfare THL and owned by the University Properties of Finland Ltd.

– The new building is a significant project for the whole region in these economically challenging times. The goal is a modern, flexible and reasonably priced solution. Other operators in the health care sector will also move into the new building which will surely create new collaboration and synergy benefits, says Rector Kalervo Väänänen.

The goal of the City of Turku is to develop the Kupittaa area into an attractive and sought after innovative environment for companies and communities as well as for education and research. The Medisiina D building answers these needs and joins different organisations under the same roof.

A Flexible and Versatile Building

The facility planning aims at versatility and flexibility in order to support the joint activities and to ensure that services can be organised together and that the facilities are used economically to their full extent. In addition, the facility solutions as well as the choice of supporting structures and materials follow the principle of sustainable development, which will also contribute towards affordable operating costs.  The building project is applying for the BREEAM Bespoke environment certificate.

– The planned building will provide many new openings for synergy and extensive co-operation. Medisiina D will enable close collaboration between many different organisations and corresponds extremely well to the principles of sustainable development in construction, says Director of Customer Relations and Campus Development Juha Uotila from the University Properties of Finland Ltd.

New Collaboration Opportunities in Education, Research and Diagnostics

Medisiina D and the new T3 hospital of the Hospital District of Southwest Finland will be built between the T and A hospital buildings, and together they will form a compact and practical campus in the Turku University Hospital area. Medisiina D is right in the centre of the hospital operations creating new possibilities for collaboration in education, research and diagnostics.

The Hospital District will centralise some of its Public Utility Tyks-Sapa operations into Medisiina D, such as the laboratory services of Tykslab and the Medical Imaging Centre of Southwest Finland. Also the joint services of the University of Turku and the University Hospital, for example Auria Biobank, will be situated in the new building. In addition, the teaching facilities of the special health care units in the future T3 hospital building will be situated at Medisiina D and shared by the students of the University of Turku and Turku University of Applied Sciences.
