New Consortium Led from University of Turku Receives Funding from Strategic Research Council
A consortium led by Professor Maija Setälä, University of Turku, has received funding from the Strategic Research Council.
The Strategic Research Council has granted funding to 13 research consortia in three new programmes. The programmes are called Changing Society and Active Citizenship, Adaptation and Resilience for Sustainable Growth and Keys to Sustainable Growth.
Maija Setälä, Professor in Political Science at the University of Turku, heads the Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO) consortium which addresses the problem of ‘short-termism’ in public decision-making and governance.
The consortium develops practices for deliberative citizen participation that take into account long-term effects and can be applied in Finland and abroad. The multidisciplinary project includes researchers from the University of Tampere, Natural Resources Institute Finland and Åbo Akademi University. Professor Henri Vogt at the University of Turku acts as the project's interaction coordinator. The consortium is part of the Changing Society and Active Citizenship programme.
In addition, five researchers from the University of Turku act as work package leaders in consortia led by other universities or research institutes:
- Markku Jokisipilä, Tackling Biases and Bubbles in Participation (BIBU) consortium
- Jari Kaivo-oja, Manufacturing 4.0 - strategies for technological, economical, educational and social policy adoption consortium
- Erno Lehtinen, Growing Mind: Educational Transformations for Facilitating Sustainable Personal, Social and Institutional Renewal in the Digital Age consortium
- Tapio Salakoski, Growing Mind: Educational Transformations for Facilitating Sustainable Personal, Social and Institutional Renewal in the Digital Age consortium
- Markku Wilenius, Creative adaptation to wicked socio-environmental disruptions (WISE)
These selections by the Strategic Research Council are based on the applications' societal relevance, impact and research quality. These criteria were assessed in expert panels consisting mainly of international members. At the first stage, the SRC received 93 letters of intent for the three programmes, of which 32 consortia were selected to the second stage.
The Strategic Research Council has previously granted funding to four consortia led from the University of Turku.
